Dealing with Quarantine
Your semester is almost over, just a few weeks and your free to go home. So far COVID cases on your campus have been few, and what few there are have been handled well. You think that your corner is safe; it only happens to other people, right? Then suddenly, your assurance is shaken as one of your housemates tests positive.
At first you’re annoyed about being quarantined — really! What makes it even worse this time: it’s right on campus. Great. Just wonderful. You can’t go to classes; you can’t even go for a walk. On top of that, you had plans to see your friend for lunch.
Well, what to do now? Firstly, and most importantly, do not blame the poor roommate that got sick. It’s just something that happens. Keep in touch with that roomie, cheer them up, let them know that they are missed, and you hope that they get better.
If you choose to be annoyed at anything, be upset that this virus chose to exist and ruin what could have been another great year for everyone. Everyone likely thought that they would be slowly getting back to their normal routine. Even if it was while wearing masks. But, that has changed now.
Even if you are stuck in the house, you are still in school. You have schoolwork to do, assignments to get done on time and so forth. That can serve as a good source of distraction, a productive thing to do while you are inside. When you are done for the day, you can still hang with your housemates if you choose. Plus, the college is delivering meals, so you don’t even have to cook. The cafeteria food is not the best, but you can all joke about that to help lighten the mood a bit. Additionally, with all your time gained from not walking to class and such, you have more time to try out new things such as a new show, a new game or even perfect and important piece of homework.
Even if you do not choose to hang, you can support each other every day. Help each other out with schoolwork, be a sounding board for someone who is struggling, and be a friend to your housemates. Be calm, and don’t spread negativity. It just drags everyone down and adds no value to anybody’s lives.
